Context
As the lead instructional designer, I spearheaded the development and continuous enhancement of the Department of Communication’s Canvas Master Template (CARTA Blueprint) at Florida International University. This initiative established a scalable, department-wide framework to support consistent, high-quality online course design aligned with institutional standards.
Two major iterations define the initiative:
Blueprint 2.0 (2020): Designed and implemented the original master template, establishing a clean, accessible, and engaging standard adopted across all Communication courses
Blueprint 3.0 (2024): Led a collaborative redesign with the FIU Online Learning Design & Innovation (LDI) team and departmental leadership, enhancing navigation, accessibility, and support for emerging instructional tools and assessment models
Problem
Prior to the Blueprint initiative, courses across the department faced:
Inconsistent design, structure, and student experience across sections
Gaps in alignment between learning objectives, activities, and assessments
Limited adherence to Quality Matters (QM) and accessibility standards
Inefficient course development and maintenance processes
Lack of a scalable framework to support growth and innovation

Recent Blueprint (2.0) Version (2020): Led the collaboration and design of a clean, accessible, and engaging visual framework that became the official Canvas Master Template for all Department of Communication courses. This version served as the department’s standard from 2020 to 2024, ensuring consistency, accessibility, and quality alignment across programs.

Actions Taken
Led the design, development, and implementation of a department-wide Canvas Master Template
Applied Backward Design principles to ensure alignment between objectives, activities, and assessments
Embedded QM-aligned standards and best practices into template structure
Developed module-level frameworks including:
Clear module introductions
Measurable learning objectives
Structured learning pathways
Integrated interactive learning tools, including:
H5P
Harmonize
PlayPosit
Ensured ADA and accessibility compliance through consistent formatting, alt text practices, and readable design
Collaborated with FIU Online LDI team and departmental stakeholders to ensure adoption and scalability
Designed the template as a sustainable, updatable system to support long-term course maintenance
Framework
Implemented a Scalable Instructional Design Framework grounded in:
Backward Design – Aligning outcomes, assessments, and learning activities
Quality Matters (QM) Standards – Ensuring course quality and certification readiness
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) – Supporting diverse learners and accessibility
Consistency & Standardization – Creating a unified student experience across courses
Technology Integration Strategy – Embedding tools that enhance engagement and interaction
Continuous Improvement Model – Enabling iterative updates and long-term sustainability
Impact
Established a department-wide standard for online course design and delivery
Supported 100+ online courses with a consistent, high-quality framework
Improved student experience, clarity, and engagement across course sections
Increased QM certification readiness and alignment
Enhanced accessibility and inclusivity across all courses
Streamlined course development, maintenance, and faculty onboarding processes
Positioned FIU Online as a leader in innovative, scalable instructional design
Key Takeaway
The Canvas Master Template demonstrates how intentional design, collaboration, and standardization can transform fragmented course experiences into a cohesive, scalable, and high-impact learning ecosystem.
